Westdale: Village fare

The compact and charming Westdale Village Dining District offers more than 30 food establishments offering everything from classic Italian to sushi to Persian fare catering to McMaster students, hospital staff, theatre-goers, and neighbourhood residents.

In the last century, there was a chapter in my life when I rode the bus from the Mountain to McMaster. It wasn’t cool to bring lunch and entering the Arts III cafeteria terrified me. I never did stroll down to Westdale’s core – now referred to as the Village – so I have no recollection of what it may have offered a hungry student. Later, I lived for a period near Westdale where, over the years, I frequented Mother’s Pizza and the Bean Bar, and became a fan of Tally Ho and Harvey’s (both near the village core). Only Tally Ho remains. The Bean Bar was recently irreparably damaged by fire and a new eatery will soon open in its place.

This community acquired the name of “Westdale” in a 1923 name the neighbourhood contest. Its development was a project incorporating the concepts of the Garden City Movement – an approach to urban planning. While the history books do not hide the fact that it began as a white Protestant neighbourhood, a century later diversity abounds – driven by the academic community, the local workforce, and residents. That diversity is clearly reflected in the food options serving the students and faculty, hospital personnel, and the neighbourhood population that ranges from young families to mature residents.

It doesn’t take long to walk along both sides of the Village’s King Street West. Today, more than 30 food establishments await your attention in that compact space. Many are strictly takeout with a handful offering dine-in options. Here are the stories of a few.

Several of our Dining District articles have included Burnt Tongue which, since its first appearance in 2013, has enriched more than one community with its delicious offerings. Each location specializes in small-batch soups, drawing daily menus from a huge repertoire. Soups can be paired with an impressive selection of sandwiches, salads, burgers, and fries, catering to a range of dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, and celiac-friendly choices. The Westdale location is the home of its Commissary Kitchen, where all soups, sauces, dressings, and more are made from scratch. There are also cooking classes at this Westdale location and catering orders are prepared there as well.

Casual Gourmet is not an eatery, but has much to offer people who love to cook and connect over food. The kitchen and fine-food store offers cookware, gourmet foods, and unique gifts. It’s one of those IYKYK spots – as in “If You Know, You Know.” You know you can stop by daily for freshly baked chocolate chip cookies – and more of what Hamilton offers. Pick up local kombucha, farm-fresh eggs, frozen prepared meals, J. Waldron meats, and a curated selection of local small-business coffee beans, loose-leaf tea, gourmet snacks, spices, olive oils, and chocolates perfect for gifting or everyday enjoyment. Dear Grain bread is delivered every Tuesday and featured at Casual Gourmet’s booth at the Westdale Farmers Market that runs until October, where you can enjoy locally made samosas and made-in-store mango lassis.

Try a combo such as #5, composed of Dynamite, Crunch and California rolls. The chef choice includes 10 pieces of nigiri that include salmon, tuna, shrimp, tamago (omelette-like egg), BBQ eel, saba (mackerel), and whitefish. Check out the weekend brunch. In Lettuce Love’s words, “we are more than just a restaurant; we are a sanctuary for those seeking a meal that nourishes the body, soul, and planet.”

Nannaa Persian Eatery

One of the most charming dine-in eateries is Nannaa, opened in 2018 as an offshoot of Rayhoon’s in Burlington. Mohammad Emami, the creative drive behind Nannaa, is achieving his mission to invite people to learn about and enjoy Persian cuisine. The menu consists mainly of grills, stews, and rice, with spices and ingredients including pistachio, pomegranate, saffron, sumac, cardamom, rose water, and mint. Nannaa offers delivery and takeout and a popular catering service. A few steps away from The Westdale, which has greatly expanded its offerings to include not just films but performances and events, Nannaa has become, for many, an appealing pre-show date.

Nonna Lia

1045 King St. W.
nonnalia.ca
IG: nonnalia_kitchen

Founded by Nico Marchisio, the Nonna Lia team, which includes a pastry chef from Milan, is turning out desserts that will turn your head. Choose from small-box tiramisu, larger tiramisu cakes, semifreddo, and gelato bars. See them all online on the company website, and if you can’t visit the Toronto flagship store, drop by Chungchun. Yes, Nonna Lia daily refreshes a display case at the Korean rice dog place where you can also pick up cakes ordered online. The connection to Chungchun and many bubble tea cafés is linked to the Asian community’s embrace of all their creative flavours: matcha, Earl Grey, mango passion fruit, strawberry, pistachio, Thai tea, hazelnut, ube and coconut, and biscoff. Read the backstory about Marchisio’s nonna on Nonna Lia’s website.

Paisley Coffeehouse & Eatery

There is almost always a wee lineup at this coffeehouse beginning even early morning with patrons anticipating their breakfast sandwiches. Opened in 2017, its fan base has grown, responding to the interesting menu with vegan and gluten-free options. Breakfast items are served all day, as are soups, salads, bowls, and sweet treats. There is much that makes this a place for great nourishing, homemade food.

Realfruity Ice Cream

998 King St. W.
realfruity.ca
IG: realfruityicecream

Using a specialized machine to blend ice cream or froyo with real fruit is a quintessential treat in New Zealand. Two years ago, Jacob Koenig returned from his Kiwi holiday inspired to bring this made-to-order, naturally sweetened soft serve to his home of Westdale. The first chapter of this enterprise was a customized cargo bike that enabled him to take fruit ice cream to parties, parks, and events such as Hamilton’s Art Crawl. Now available in his charming shop in Westdale, the whimsical space routinely has people lining up to pick an ice cream base and preferred fruit, and watch the fancy New Zealand machine whip it all into a delicious fruity soft serve. The flavours rotate and feature seasonal fruits. Says Koenig: “Ice cream … is a treat that truly helps people bond. Even if the moment is brief, it’s such a nostalgic dessert that makes people happy.”

The Express Italian Eatery

1034 King St. W.
expressrestaurant.com
IG: theexpressrestaurant

With roots dating back to 1994, The Express has expanded to four locations, including Stoney Creek, Burlington, Westdale, and Winona. Their stated goal is to provide dishes that are fresh, hearty and simply unforgettable, including wood-fired pizzas and calzones, grilled paninis, pastas, and entrées. Specialties include spaghetti alla Milanese, lobster ravioli, and chicken parmigiana. Locals enjoy the dine-in setting, as well as the delivery and takeout options. The menu is classic Italian, with a party menu as well. Watch for holiday specials.

The Mule Tacos to Go

1050 King St. W.
themule.ca
IG: themulemakestacos

The food repertoire of The Other Bird hospitality group includes The Mule – a taco fan favourite since the first location opened on King William Street, expanding since then to six locations. Opening in September, The Mule Tacos to Go will deliver the same quality and creativity but instead of a full-service restaurant, the Mule magic will come in the form of “grab and go, couch delivery, and nights when putting on pants feels optional … same bold flavours, same fresh ingredients … your shortcut to a taco fix.” As always their kitchen is 100 per cent gluten- and peanut-free. At the time of this writing, the new menu is still in progress, but is sure to please.

Valentino’s Restaurant

824 King St. W.
valentinosrestaurant.ca
IG: valentinosrestaurant

Westdale is the original location for this family operation, opened in 1978, serving Hamilton for nearly 50 years.  Their brand is rooted in tradition and open to innovation, aiming – in their own words – to deliver quality Italian cuisine where bold ideas meet careful execution. The menu features pizza, pasta, house-brewed craft beer, and house-made pastries, and gelato. Renovated in 2018, the décor of the dining room and patio offer inviting spaces for family, celebrations, and casual gatherings. Valentino’s offers private events, takeout catering, and a selection of pastries and cakes.

Weil’s Bakery

981 King St. W.
weilsbakery.com
IG: weilsbakery

With roots dating back to 1903, Weil’s continues to offer customers high-quality, “from-scratch” baked goods that include artisan breads, cakes, pies, and classic pastries, cookies, and cupcakes. You may also find its goods in some restaurants and cafés. You’ll find classics such as Black Forest and German chocolate cake, savoury pies, and “Weil’s famous” carrot cake. The shop also makes custom cakes for all occasions and boxed pastries timed for various holidays.

White Lotus

1008 King St. W.
whitelotusrestaurant.ca
IG: whitelotus_restaurant

Longtime friends Khum Tran and John Keosongseng actualized their vision of opening an authentic Thai restaurant. They are delighted with the reception they have received in their first year of operation, acquiring many repeat customers often coming from a distance. Dishes are made to order using local fresh ingredients. The spice level is low by default and increased by request. White Lotus values customer service and is open to accommodations (halal, veggie, GF) and substitutes. With a few window seats inside, and outdoor seating when weather permits, the eatery is mainly takeout and delivery, and can be busy at peak meal times. Don’t take a pass on the creamy Thai iced tea made with tea leaves from Chiang Mai.

Much more to experience

Don’t be fooled by the compact size of Westdale Village. It has even more to offer, reflecting classic eateries and diversity: Dragon Court (Chinese), Saigon Asian, Hungry Donkey (Greek), Burrito Bandidos (Mexican), Mister Maki (Japanese), Lazeez Shawarma (Middle Eastern). As for classics Snooty Fox offers pub-style food. Visit The Alley, Westdale Café, and Northmark Coffee, Smoke's Poutinerie for poutine, Presotea for bubble teas and coffees, Pizza Nova and Pizzaiolo for pizza, and Walker’s Chocolates, Insomnia Cookies, and TCBY’s for a sweet ending.
