Your ultimate Hamilton fun & food guide

Are you looking to play with your food? From bowling, escape rooms, and axe throwing to open mics, batting cages, karaoke bars, and board game cafés, you'll never have to choose between a great meal and a great time.

We’ve all been there. You and your besties are planning a night out, and the WhatsApp group is buzzing with ideas about what to do, where to go, and what kind of vibe everyone’s after. Some nights, dinner as the main event just doesn’t cut it. People often want to do something. Maybe it’s crossing axe throwing off the bucket list. Maybe your bestie decides it’s time to grab the mic at karaoke, or you simply want to share a few laughs over a board game or in a batting cage. Then again, maybe you’d rather sit back and be entertained. Whatever your idea of fun, this guide is packed with places where you can play before, during, or after you eat. Because in Hamilton, you really can have it all in one night out.

Pheasant Plucker

Tracie's Place Restaurant & Karaoke

The fun: Tracie’s Place has kept Hamilton’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community laughing since 2012. If drag queen bingo or nightly karaoke don’t get you chuckling, it’s time to call it a night. As the sign says: “You don’t have to be crazy to sing karaoke with us — we can teach you.”
The food: Share a yummy main (wraps, wings, burgers, nachos, perogies) and then splurge on hot apple crisp and Turtle brownies.

Shady Grove Lukaya Café

The fun: An intimate Tuesday night open mic draws local singers, songwriters, and acoustic performers — in what could be a 1970s cottage living room — creating one of Hamilton's warmest musical gatherings. Local musician Brennagh Burns frequently hosts. Kitchen party feel.
The food: Not a full restaurant, this cozy spot on Hamilton Mountain, with mismatched sofas and a mixed collection of local art, is known for its fresh-baked scones (a customer favourite), cookies, and lattes.  It carries a selection of loose-leaf and specialty Shady Grove teas.
592 Upper Wellington St.

Shawn & Ed Brewing Co.

The entertainment: Music to Our Beers, each Thursday night, features live local music. Often it’s standing room only. Trivia night is Wednesday and free concerts are held Friday.

The Well

The entertainment: This 2SLGBTQIA+ bar is one of Hamilton's friendliest venues for first-time karaoke singers. Belt out a show tune or pop anthem on Thursday night or all-day Sunday karaoke. Expect lots of ABBA and Adele, camp classics, and Broadway tunes. The Well also hosts drag shows, bingo, and themed events.
The food: Fuel your inner diva with pizzas, sandwiches, salads, and panzerottis from Topper’s Pizza that is connected to the bar.

THE POWER OF FUN AT THE BARD AND BEAR

People come to play. They come to eat. What keeps them coming back, though, is often something less tangible: the chance to connect. Shared activities, whether it’s throwing an axe or line dancing, and shared meals have a way of turning an ordinary night out in Hamilton into conversation, camaraderie, and community. Steve Edmonds, co-owner of The Bard and Bear Games Café, has seen it happen time and again.

Board Games: The Great Connector

"My wife, Megan, and I have always loved how board game cafés bring people together. Games are a universal connector; they've been bringing people around a table for thousands of years. After COVID, that need for real face-to-face connection became even more important. We opened Bard and Bear because we saw board games as a way of creating genuine human connection. The café is really just the place where that happens."

Beyond the Board Game

"People come here for much more than board games. Some are serious gamers and have played Operation and Cards Against Humanity for years. Others are just looking to improve their skills, learn a new game, or seeking something different to do with friends. From Jenga and themed events to crafting nights and live-action role-playing, play takes many forms – but it always brings people together. And of course, they come here because of the food and we're fully licensed, with a menu of beer, wine and cocktails to enjoy while you play.”

FUN & FOOD: ASK A LOCAL

Need a recommendation? Crystal Luscombe has probably already tried it. Through eight years of exploring Hamilton with friends, and organizing hikes as events coordinator and social media manager for Happy Hikers Hamilton, she's discovered plenty of places that bring together good food, fun, and community.

Crystal Luscombe is events coordinator and and social media manager for Happy Hikers Hamilton.

Best night out for a group of 5 to 6: free music bingo every Wednesday at Collective Arts Brewery is hard to beat. You can grab a panini onsite but I’ll often suggest District Tapas on Barton Street.

The best laughs in town: Catch Uncloseted Comedy, The Staircase's monthly showcase of queer performers (last Thursday of the month), then head to Ciao Bella for a post-show dinner.

Music and food together: I keep coming back to The Corktown Irish Pub for its live music lineup. Depending on the night, you'll find local bands, karaoke, open mic jazz, or traditional Irish music, all paired with satisfying pub fare.

For groups of 15 or more: My first choice is Never Board Games Café on Concession Street. It's spacious, packed with games, serves good food, and owners Roger and Holly go out of their way to make groups feel at home.

Best community vibe: I find a sense of community in so many Hamilton venues, but Merit Brewing stands out. Between the long communal tables and drag bingo, it's hard not to strike up a conversation with the people around you.

Next group activity on my wish list: Treetop Trekking at Binbrook Conservation Area. And after a few hours in the trees, I'd be happy to eat just about anywhere.
