ON THE MENU: WHAT’S OPENED AND CLOSED ON THE LOCAL RESTAURANT SCENE

Here's a list of what has come, gone and changed in Hamilton and Burlington in March and April.

Launched & opening soon

Akus Family Dining (518 Concession St., Hamilton). Taking over the former Stage Diner’s location with an extensive all-day breakfast menu, plus lunch items like lasagna, shrimp coconut rice & chicken, and wings. Opened April 27.

Bean & Bagel Co. (Victoria Medical Centre, Victoria & Barton, Hamilton). Bustling bright little café tucked inside the lobby of a medical building, you’re served by the two friendly owners Dayn and Blake. The bagel sandwiches are piled impossibly high, at impossibly good prices. Vegan and gluten-free options available.

Candy Planet (Eastgate Square, Hamilton). “Mississauga’s largest exotic candy store” had the grand opening of its second location at Eastgate Square on April 13. The colourful shop stocks candies and treats from around the world.

Hot Takes (807 Main St. W., Hamilton). Opened at the beginning of April across from Westdale Secondary. Middle Eastern & Mediterranean cuisine including kebab, kofta, pasticcio, and French tacos, which are something like a grilled burrito filled with meat and cheese.

Kawartha Dairy (3465 Fairview St., Burlington). The cottage country creamery has expanded south into Burlington with cones, milkshakes, and milk products.

Oh Momos (Centre on Barton, Hamilton). Serving momos (dumplings), wings , chicken & fish pakoras, wraps, bowls, and shakes.

MightyBird (2465 Appleby Line, Burlington). The Toronto eatery opened its second fast casual location in Burlington with a menu that revolves around its buttermilk marinated crispy chicken.

My Roti Place (1807 Stonechurch Rd. E., Hamilton). This Toronto franchise touts its warm, pillowy, freshly made roti, creamy butter chicken and crispy dosas, and has finally landed in Hamilton.

Rebranding & evolving

Down The Street Food Co (201 Ottawa St., Hamilton). Moved two doors down to a full sit-down family-style diner with breakfast on the weekends.

Moms Baked Again (468 Wentworth St. Hamilton). Recently joined The Market General Store inside the Hamilton Farmers’ Market as a Saturday pop-up. Your weekend market grocery list can now include the legendary NYC croissant rolls.

Closed & closing

Hanma Japanese Foods (King Street West, Dundas). Chef and owner Taka Li originally announced that Hanma would be reopening under new ownership, but it was not to be and the business is now officially closed.

Pierogi Me! (Lakeshore Road, Burlington). Announced on Instagram that its Burlington store will be closing permanently on May 4. Operations will continue as usual at its Ancaster location.

Stage Diner (Concession Street, Hamilton). Owner Darryl announced on social media on April 5 that Stage Diner has closed and it’s “now time for a new restaurant to go in and to take over.”
